Picture a tourist glancing at a foreign menu through smart eyewear, watching the text translate instantly while the dish names are whispered back in English. That kind of on-device intelligence is exactly what Samsung's newest devices, built on Qualcomm Technologies' latest Snapdragon platforms, are designed to deliver — across phones, watches and glasses alike.
One Chip Family to Power Samsung's Entire Next-Gen Lineup
Qualcomm Technologies will power Samsung's full next-generation lineup, including the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Flip8, Galaxy Watch9, Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and the brand-new Intelligent Eyewear.
Behind these devices sit three processors: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, the Snapdragon Wear Elite Platform, and the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1. Together, Qualcomm says, they create a unified AI experience spanning smartphones, wearables and intelligent eyewear.
Because the AI processes information directly on the device rather than routing it through the cloud, it can respond instantly while keeping personal data more private and better attuned to what the user is doing in the moment.
"We're entering a new age of AI, where intelligence is built into the personal devices people rely on throughout the day."— Cristiano Amon, President and CEO, Qualcomm Incorporated
What Snapdragon's New Chip Actually Means for Consumers
While flagship launches tend to focus on sleek design or foldable displays, it's the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy underneath that shapes how Samsung's new Fold and Flip devices actually feel to use day to day.
Won-Joon Choi, President and COO of MX Business at Samsung Electronics, says the new Galaxy lineup reflects close engineering collaboration with Qualcomm, with Snapdragon platforms optimised for each Galaxy form factor to secure the performance and efficiency behind Galaxy AI — creating one consistent experience across phones, watches and eyewear.
At the heart of the chip is Qualcomm's Oryon CPU, which the company describes as the fastest mobile CPU available — designed to keep tasks like editing 4K video on a Z Fold8's inner screen while running a split-screen video call feeling smooth rather than sluggish. Crucially, that extra speed comes with improved power efficiency, avoiding the battery drain and heat that faster chips have historically caused.
How the Chip Translates to Better On-Device AI
The benefits of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 become most apparent through on-device AI rather than tasks that rely on the cloud. Localised processing enables real-time capabilities such as instantly correcting motion blur or optimising lighting in a photo before the user even sees it.
That extra speed also supports deeper personalisation. For example, a text about dinner plans arriving on the Z Flip8's cover screen can prompt the on-device AI to cross-reference the user's calendar and suggest a nearby restaurant reservation with a single tap.
