ChatGPT Health: OpenAI’s Privacy-Focused AI Tool for Personal Healthcare Support
OpenAI introduces a dedicated health space within ChatGPT, isolating medical data with encryption and enhanced security controls.
OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Health, a dedicated environment for AI-powered health support that operates separately from general ChatGPT conversations. Designed with enhanced privacy protections, the tool helps users manage personal healthcare by combining medical records, wellness apps, and conversational AI in one encrypted space.
With more than 230 million users turning to ChatGPT each week for health-related questions, OpenAI positions ChatGPT Health as a natural evolution of how people already seek guidance on symptoms, fitness, nutrition, and test results.
ChatGPT Health works alongside—rather than in place of—medical professionals. It helps users interpret information, plan diet and fitness routines, and ask everyday health questions, while keeping sensitive data isolated from non-health conversations.
Health Data in One Encrypted Space
OpenAI created ChatGPT Health to address the fragmentation of health information. Instead of spreading data across wearables, apps, and medical portals, the tool consolidates these sources into a single, secure environment.
Health conversations live in a separate section of the platform with their own memory and do not mix with general AI chats. If a medical topic arises in a standard ChatGPT conversation, users are prompted to switch to the Health space for additional protection.
Users can connect external services such as Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, and Function. In the United States, medical record access is enabled through b.well, a healthcare network that adheres to strict privacy and security standards.
Access to connected apps or health records can be revoked at any time through Settings. Although limited lifestyle context may be referenced, health data never leaves its secure environment.
OpenAI confirms that files, conversations, and memory entries within ChatGPT Health remain locked in that space unless explicitly deleted or edited by the user.
Built With Medical Expertise and Security Standards
ChatGPT Health uses the same foundational security framework as ChatGPT, with additional protections for sensitive medical information. This includes encrypted storage and data transmission, custom encryption layers, and isolated systems for health data handling.
Health-related conversations are not used to train OpenAI’s foundation models. Features such as memory deletion, temporary chats, and multi-factor authentication provide users with greater control over their data.
Third-party applications undergo enhanced security review and are limited to accessing only the minimum data required. Users receive transparent information about data access and can revoke permissions at any time.
Physicians play a key role in shaping ChatGPT Health. OpenAI collaborates with more than 260 doctors across 60 countries and medical specialties. These clinicians have evaluated model responses over 600,000 times, helping define safety thresholds, urgency flags, and response quality.
The system is tested using HealthBench, a physician-informed evaluation platform that measures clarity, appropriateness, escalation of care, and relevance—without attempting to diagnose medical conditions.
A Shift in How Users Approach Healthcare
The launch of ChatGPT Health has triggered wide discussion across the healthtech sector. Competitors such as Anthropic have entered the space with tools like Claude for Healthcare, highlighting rapid growth in AI-driven personal health platforms.
Max Jones, Chief AI Officer at RPNA and Non-Executive Director in the UK’s NHS, describes ChatGPT Health as a platform with significant implications. He notes that public behavior may increasingly drive AI-based triage as patients seek immediate guidance during health uncertainty.
Others see the tool as a turning point. Max Sinclair, Founder and CEO of Azoma, called it a “watershed moment,” suggesting AI-assisted assessments may rival traditional consultations in speed and perceived accuracy.
Ben Legg, Co-Founder and CEO of The Portfolio Collective, believes AI will increasingly act as a primary triage layer—reviewing medical histories, analysing wearable data, and summarising symptoms before patients see a clinician.
ChatGPT Health is currently available to select users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. The service is limited to the United States, with features such as medical record integration and app connections unavailable in the UK, Switzerland, and the wider European Economic Area. Apple Health integration requires iOS.
By positioning ChatGPT Health as a support system rather than a replacement for clinicians, OpenAI places itself at the center of an ongoing debate about AI’s role in healthcare—seeking balance between convenience, safety, and clinical responsibility.
