NHS England is deploying Microsoft 365 Copilot to over half a million clinicians and support staff in one of the most ambitious AI rollouts in global healthcare history. Backed by a 2025 trial that saved staff an average of 43 minutes of admin per day, the deployment aims to dramatically reduce bureaucratic burden, cut costs, and give healthcare professionals more time for what matters most — treating patients.
From Trial to Full-Scale Deployment
The nationwide rollout follows the largest AI trial of its kind ever conducted in global healthcare, carried out in 2025. That pilot gave more than 30,000 NHS workers across 90 NHS organisations access to Microsoft 365 Copilot, demonstrating that AI-powered administrative support could save an average of 43 minutes per staff member per day — the equivalent of five weeks of time per person annually.
Projecting those results to a full rollout, the NHS estimates the technology could save up to 400,000 hours of staff time per month and millions of pounds every month based on 100,000 users — with potential annual cost savings reaching into the hundreds of millions, all to be reinvested directly into frontline patient care and services.
"Technology should support our NHS staff, not slow them down. By rolling out Microsoft Copilot across the NHS, we can reduce that burden, free up clinicians' time and help staff focus on what they do best — caring for patients."— Preet Kaur Gill, Health Innovation and Safety Minister
How Copilot Will Be Used Across the NHS
Copilot will be applied across a wide range of NHS functions to ease operational pressures at every level. Clinicians will use it to draft letters and support registrar training; ward clerks will leverage it for patient discharge processes, rota building, and bed management; and medical secretaries will benefit from faster drafting of patient letters, meeting minutes, and reusable templates.
Beyond clinical roles, core services including HR, finance, and procurement will be supported, while management teams will gain assistance with board papers, briefings, and organisational analysis — reducing time spent on documentation across the entire health service.
Copilot Studio: Custom Automation for NHS Trusts
The agreement also grants NHS organisations access to Copilot Studio, a platform that allows teams to build custom AI agents tailored to their specific workflows. While NHS England will deploy agents centrally, individual Trusts will have the flexibility to create bespoke solutions — from reducing helpdesk burdens and accelerating complaints handling to improving financial analysis and freedom of information request processing.
All agents built through the platform will operate under Agent 365, a security framework ensuring every custom tool adheres fully to organisational policies. The rollout will follow a structured 12-month onboarding plan, with a rapid scale-up targeting 200,000 users within the first six months, supported by an extensive training and adoption programme.
"NHS England wants to embrace cutting-edge technology and this Microsoft partnership will mean staff can be freed from admin so they can focus on what they want to be doing — treating patients."— Rob Thompson, Chief Digital, Data and Technology Officer, NHS England
