Fifth Third (NYSE: FITB) has rolled out a new AI-powered interface inside its mobile banking app, letting customers type plain-language requests like "replace card" or "find ATM" instead of navigating traditional menus. The bank frames the move as the first concrete step toward agentic banking, where customers will eventually be able to ask the bank to take action on their behalf.
From Menus to Natural Language
The new capability changes how customers move through Fifth Third's mobile app. Rather than scrolling through nested menus, users can simply type what they need — such as "replace card," "find ATM," "transfer funds," or "closest branch" — and the system routes them directly to the most relevant experience, whether that's a simple task-completion screen, an AI chatbot, or a live Fifth Third representative.
The interface is powered by advanced language understanding models trained on hundreds of millions of customer interactions, and is designed to keep improving over time as it learns from usage patterns, delivering increasingly precise and relevant results.
"AI is a powerful tool, but in banking it has to be applied with discipline because customers rightly expect speed, accuracy and reliability every time. This is the first step toward changing the interface of banking itself — from static screens and taps to customers using their own words, supported by dynamic visual experiences, to get things done."— Ben Hoffman, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Consumer Products, Fifth Third
An Enhanced Mobile Experience
Fifth Third's mobile app already lets customers manage finances, move money, access insights, and connect with the bank. The new AI-powered interface builds on that foundation, making the app's growing set of capabilities easier to discover and use without requiring customers to know exactly where a feature lives.
Beyond this initial launch, Fifth Third plans to use customer engagement insights to refine the experience and prioritize future agentic AI capabilities across account opening, routine servicing, fraud and disputes, and financial advice. Each interaction is expected to deepen the bank's understanding of customer intent, laying groundwork for experiences that can anticipate — and eventually act on — customer needs.
Rollout and Context
The new interface has already begun rolling out to customers and is expected to be fully available by the end of the month. Customers can learn more at 53.com/mobile.
The announcement comes shortly after Fifth Third completed its merger with Comerica in February 2026, a deal that made it the ninth-largest bank in the United States, with approximately $294 billion in assets and operations spanning 15 states. Founded in 1858, the bank has also been recognized for several years among Ethisphere's World's Most Ethical Companies®.
