Faulty Martech Stacks Are Costing Businesses Customers and Reputation
A recent Intermedia Global (IMG) survey reveals that 24% of senior marketers in mid-sized UK companies lost customers over the past year due to martech stack failures. Nearly all respondents (97%) reported technology-related issues affecting customers, while 93% cited problems caused by AI-powered tools.
Karla Wentworth, IMG’s Chief Strategy Officer, warns that poorly implemented martech can “erode the customer experience and threaten the entire brand.”
Key findings from the study
- 24% of CMOs lost customers over the past year due to poor martech, while 40% received customer complaints.
- 93% reported customer-facing errors due to AI tools — 48% experienced more than one incident.
- 32% of brands’ tech issues originated from the marketing department.
- Email marketing and automation vendors were most likely to be considered unhelpful.
How martech failures impact businesses
Marketing technology has become a double-edged sword. While it promises efficiency and personalization, the IMG survey shows that 97% of CMOs experienced martech-related issues leading to negative outcomes such as:
- 25% faced negative publicity due to martech errors.
- 40% dealt with customer complaints.
- 34% experienced campaign delays.
- 19% reported damaged client relationships.
These issues often stem not from the tools themselves but from poor implementation, disconnected systems, and insufficient support.
AI tools compounding the problem
AI-powered martech tools were designed to streamline workflows but have frequently created new challenges. Almost 93% of CMOs reported issues linked to AI-driven platforms, with nearly half experiencing repeated incidents.
“A badly-thought-out martech stack isn’t just a problem for marketing and IT teams – it’s an existential threat to the entire brand. Ineffective targeting, error-filled communications, and poor automation are causing brands to haemorrhage customers.” – Karla Wentworth, IMG
Wentworth emphasized that AI often worsens problems when added hastily to outdated systems, making martech stacks too complex to manage effectively.
Vendor accountability concerns
The study also found that relationships with technology vendors are failing to provide relief. Across categories such as CRM, data analytics, and website optimization, fewer than 30% of vendors were deemed helpful. Email marketing and marketing automation providers scored the lowest, with 29% and 28% of respondents labeling them actively unhelpful.
Wentworth concluded: “When marketing technology is failing customers, it’s failing the entire brand. If marketing departments are spending all their time troubleshooting their tech instead of driving creativity, businesses will continue losing ground.”
Lessons for CTOs and business leaders
For CTOs, the research underscores that adding more tools to a bloated martech stack is not the solution. Instead, businesses need to focus on:
- Streamlined, integrated systems
- Clear deployment and testing processes
- Close IT and marketing collaboration
- Holding vendors accountable for performance
In brief
The IMG survey highlights that 24% of CMOs lost customers due to faulty martech stacks, with 97% experiencing negative technology-related outcomes and 93% citing AI tool failures. To protect customer trust and brand reputation, businesses must streamline, optimize, and properly implement their martech ecosystems.
