Atlas was developed by Boston Dynamics, the American robotic design company spun out of MIT in 1992. At the heart of its performance lies advanced retargeting technology — specialised software that acts as a digital translator, mapping the organic, complex movements of human football players onto a mechanical frame while preserving the essence of each celebration.

Before Atlas ever stepped onto the grass, it had performed those celebrations millions of times in the digital realm. Through reinforcement learning, engineers used hyper-realistic virtual simulations to train the robot's AI model, testing thousands of minute movement variations per second and rewarding stability and accuracy to refine its choreography and iron out potential stumbles.

Finally, whole-body control keeps Atlas upright and fluid, treating arms, legs and torso as a single unified entity that constantly calculates and coordinates every joint in real time, balancing momentum and adapting to the friction of the pitch.
