How China Mobile and Huawei's 5G Deployment Transformed Buhua Village From Rural Poverty to a Model of Digital Revitalisation

In the karst terrain of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, Buhua Village — once a remote and economically underdeveloped community — has been transformed into a popular tourist attraction and a model of rural revitalisation, thanks to a 5G information superhighway co-built by China Mobile and Huawei. The digital leap has generated more than CNY 500,000 in annual collective village income, boosted per capita annual earnings by CNY 18,000, and raised average household income to more than CNY 80,000 — three times the income from traditional sugarcane farming — while drawing an increasing number of young people back to develop their careers in the village. Buhua Village, within the jurisdiction of Chongzuo City, upgraded its networks from 4G to 5G as early as 2021, giving residents access to digital services on par with those in China's major cities. Today, all administrative villages in Chongzuo have 5G network access, while 99% of its natural villages have 4G coverage and 94% have 5G coverage.

Overcoming Karst Geography — The Infrastructure Challenge

Chongzuo is characterised by impressive karst landforms — peak clusters and peak forests — that present major challenges for communications network buildout. The terrain makes conventional tower-based coverage approaches insufficient, requiring China Mobile and Huawei to develop technological innovations specifically designed to achieve comprehensive coverage across the region's geographic complexity. The result is a network infrastructure that has unlocked connectivity for communities that previously lacked the digital foundation for economic participation beyond local, subsistence-level agriculture.

"By bridging the digital divide, we are helping remote villages like Buhua develop digital trade alongside traditional agriculture. This is transforming resources that were not fully used in the past due to geographical limitations into strong momentum for economic growth in the digital age."

— Zhou Peng, General Manager, China Mobile Guangxi's Chongzuo Branch

Digital Commerce, Tourism, and AI-Powered Ecological Management

The 5G infrastructure has catalysed the growth of Buhua's distinctive local industries across three domains. In digital commerce, a village-owned e-commerce ecosystem has been established in Xinhe Town, featuring 65 product stores on platforms including JD.com and Douyin, alongside a live-streaming incubation base nurturing 27 local live streamers. These stores generate more than CNY 300,000 in annual revenue by selling local specialties — most significantly Buhua brown sugar, a handcrafted product recognised as intangible cultural heritage. The brown sugar commands a 150% price premium over standard brown sugar and is now sold to China's tier-1 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, with exports reaching Japan and South Korea. In tourism, China Mobile has deployed an intelligent ticketing system at the Heishui River — Buhua's most popular scenic spot offering rafting, boat tours, and paddleboarding. The system has reduced the average ticket purchase time from 20 minutes to 3 minutes, with online purchases now accounting for 30% of total sales and homestay booking rates increasing by 30%. In ecological management, a safety monitoring and IT system for modern irrigation engineering along the Heishui River has been launched with total investment of CNY 100 million. Supported by the Bianjiang Zhizhou open AI platform, the digital monitoring system is set to cover 13 towns across four counties and districts in Chongzuo.

"Huawei is supporting China Mobile in building a solid digital foundation for Chongzuo with innovative solutions. We look forward to seeing technology overcome geographical limitations and enable more remote villages to achieve leapfrog development in the 5G and AI era."

— Tian Yongsheng, Deputy General Manager, Huawei Guangxi

Key Takeaways

  • Buhua Village (Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; Chongzuo City; karst terrain), once a remote and economically underdeveloped community, has been transformed into a model of rural revitalisation through a 5G information superhighway co-built by China Mobile and Huawei. Network upgraded from 4G to 5G as early as 2021. Economic impact: CNY 500,000+ annual collective village income; CNY 18,000 per capita annual earnings increase; CNY 80,000+ average household income (3x the income from traditional sugarcane farming). Young people are returning to the village to develop their careers.
  • Infrastructure achievement: Chongzuo's karst landforms (peak clusters, peak forests) present severe challenges for communications network buildout. China Mobile and Huawei developed technological innovations specifically to achieve comprehensive coverage. Result: all administrative villages in Chongzuo now have 5G access; 99% of natural villages have 4G coverage; 94% have 5G coverage — giving rural residents digital services on par with China's major cities.
  • Digital commerce: village-owned e-commerce ecosystem — 65 product stores on JD.com and Douyin; live-streaming incubation base with 27 local live streamers; CNY 300,000+ annual revenue. Flagship product: Buhua brown sugar — handcrafted intangible cultural heritage product; 150% price premium over standard brown sugar; sold to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and exported to Japan and South Korea.
  • Tourism digitisation: intelligent ticketing system at Heishui River (rafting, boat tours, paddleboarding) — ticket purchase time reduced from 20 minutes to 3 minutes; online purchases now 30% of total; homestay booking rate up 30%. The system also enables accommodation booking and provides integrated tourism management for the village's growing visitor economy.
  • Ecological and AI infrastructure: CNY 100 million safety monitoring and IT system for modern irrigation engineering along the Heishui River; supported by the Bianjiang Zhizhou open AI platform; digital monitoring system to cover 13 towns across four counties/districts in Chongzuo. Buhua Village is positioned as a replicable model demonstrating how 5G and AI can enable leapfrog development for remote villages constrained by geographical limitations — with digital infrastructure unlocking economic value previously inaccessible due to geography.
